Nvidia CEO Huang: AI is the largest infrastructure buildout in human history; AI Data Center CAPEX will generate new revenue streams for operators

Executive Summary:

In a February 6, 2026 CNBC interview with with Scott Wapner, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang [1.] characterized the current AI build‑out as “the largest infrastructure buildout in human history,” driven by exceptionally high demand for compute from hyperscalers and AI companies. “Through the roof” is how he described AI infrastructure spending.  It’s a “once-in-a-generation infrastructure buildout,” specifically highlighting that demand for Nvidia’s Blackwell chips and the upcoming Vera Rubin platform is “sky-high.” He emphasized that the shift from experimental AI to AI as a fundamental utility has reached a definitive inflection point for every major industry.

Jensen forecasts aa roughly 7–to- 8‑year AI investment cycle lies ahead, with capital intensity justified because deployed AI infrastructure is already generating rising cash flows for operators.  He maintains that the widely cited ~$660 billion AI data center capex pipeline is sustainable, on the grounds that GPUs and surrounding systems are revenue‑generating assets, not speculative overbuild. In his view, as long as customers can monetize AI workloads profitably, they will “keep multiplying their investments,” which underpins continued multi‑year GPU demand, including for prior‑generation parts that remain fully leased.

Note 1.  Being the undisputed leader of AI hardware (GPU chips and networking equipment via its Mellanox acquisition), Nvidia MUST ALWAYS MAKE POSITIVE REMARKS AND FORECASTS related to the AI build out boom.  Reader discretion is advised regarding Huang’s extremely bullish, “all-in on AI” remarks.

Huang reiterated that AI will “fundamentally change how we compute everything,” shifting data centers from general‑purpose CPU‑centric architectures to accelerated computing built around GPUs and dense networking. He emphasizes Nvidia’s positioning as a full‑stack infrastructure and computing platform provider—chips, systems, networking, and software—rather than a standalone chip vendor.  He accuratedly stated that Nvidia designs “all components of AI infrastructure” so that system‑level optimization (GPU, NIC, interconnect, software stack) can deliver performance gains that outpace what is possible with a single chip under a slowing Moore’s Law. The installed base is presented as productive: even six‑year‑old A100‑class GPUs are described as fully utilized through leasing, underscoring persistent elasticity of AI compute demand across generations.

AI Poster Childs – OpenAI and Anthropic:

Huang praised OpenAI and Anthropic, the two leading artificial intelligence labs, which both use Nvidia chips through cloud providers. Nvidia invested $10 billion in Anthropic last year, and Huang said earlier this week that the chipmaker will invest heavily in OpenAI’s next fundraising round.

“Anthropic is making great money. Open AI is making great money,” Huang said. “If they could have twice as much compute, the revenues would go up four times as much.”

He said that all the graphics processing units that Nvidia has sold in the past — even six-year old chips such as the A100 — are currently being rented, reflecting sustained demand for AI computing power.

“To the extent that people continue to pay for the AI and the AI companies are able to generate a profit from that, they’re going to keep on doubling, doubling, doubling, doubling,” Huang said.

Economics, utilization, and returns:

On economics, Huang’s central claim is that AI capex converts into recurring, growing revenue streams for cloud providers and AI platforms, which differentiates this cycle from prior overbuilds. He highlights very high utilization: GPUs from multiple generations remain in service, with cloud operators effectively turning them into yield‑bearing infrastructure.

This utilization and monetization profile underlies his view that the capex “arms race” is rational: when AI services are profitable, incremental racks of GPUs, network fabric, and storage can be modeled as NPV‑positive infrastructure projects rather than speculative capacity. He implies that concerns about a near‑term capex cliff are misplaced so long as end‑market AI adoption continues to inflect.

Competitive and geopolitical context:

Huang acknowledges intensifying global competition in AI chips and infrastructure, including from Chinese vendors such as Huawei, especially under U.S. export controls that have reduced Nvidia’s China revenue share to roughly half of pre‑control levels. He frames Nvidia’s strategy as maintaining an innovation lead so that developers worldwide depend on its leading‑edge AI platforms, which he sees as key to U.S. leadership in the AI race.

He also ties AI infrastructure to national‑scale priorities in energy and industrial policy, suggesting that AI data centers are becoming a foundational layer of economic productivity, analogous to past buildouts in electricity and the internet.

Implications for hyperscalers and chips:

Hyperscalers (and also Nvidia customers) Meta , Amazon, Google/Alphabet and Microsoft recently stated that they plan to dramatically increase spending on AI infrastructure in the years ahead. In total, these hyperscalers could spend $660 billion on capital expenditures in 2026 [2.] , with much of that spending going toward buying Nvidia’s chips. Huang’s message to them is that AI data centers are evolving into “AI factories” where each gigawatt of capacity represents tens of billions of dollars of investment spanning land, compute, and networking. He suggests that the hyperscaler industry—roughly a $2.5 trillion sector with about $500 billion in annual capex transitioning from CPU to GPU‑centric generative AI—still has substantial room to run.

Note 2.  An understated point is that while these hyperscalers are spending hundered of billions of dollars on AI data centers and Nvidia chips/equipment they are simultaneously laying off tens of thousands of employees.  For example, Amazon recently announced 16,000 job cuts this year after 14,000 layoffs last October.

From a chip‑level perspective, he argues that Nvidia’s competitive moat stems from tightly integrated hardware, networking, and software ecosystems rather than any single component, positioning the company as the systems architect of AI infrastructure rather than just a merchant GPU vendor.

    AI is accelerating the telecommunications industry’s transformation, becoming the backbone of autonomous networks and AI-native wireless infrastructure. At the same time, the technology is unlocking new business and revenue opportunities, as telecom operators accelerate AI adoption across consumers, enterprises and nations.

    NVIDIA’s fourth annual “State of AI in Telecommunications” survey report unpacks these trends, underscoring strong AI adoption, impact and investment in the industry.

    Highlights from the report:
    -90% said AI is helping increase annual revenue and drive down costs.
    -77% said they expect to see AI-native networks launch before the deployment of 6G.
    -65% of telecom operators said network automation is being driven by AI.
    -60% said their organization is using or assessing generative AI, up from 49% in 2024.
    -89% said open source models and software are important to their AI strategy.
    -89% of telcos plan to boost AI spending in 2026, up from 65% a year ago.

    “There is a seismic shift underway in the telecom industry driven by AI,” said Sebastian Barros, managing director of Circles, a Singapore-based telecommunications provider. “Communication service providers are converging on a new realization. Their role in society extends beyond moving bits across networks toward moving intelligence across local and regulated infrastructure. That transition defines the move from telco to ‘AICO’ — AI infrastructure companies operating at network proximity, not application vendors riding on top.”

    Focus on AI-Native Networks and Autonomous Operations
    Network automation has overtaken customer experience as the leading use case for investment, deployment and ROI impact. This signals a bold step toward autonomous networks — AI-driven, self-managing systems that can self-configure, self-heal and self-optimize with minimal human intervention. Eighty-eight percent of organizations report being between levels 1-3 of autonomy, as defined by the TM Forum, and the use of generative AI and agentic AI is expected to accelerate the shift to level 5 autonomous networks.

    “Autonomous networks are delivering return on investment faster than any other AI use case because they directly reduce outages, energy consumption and manual intervention,” said Chetan Sharma, CEO of Chetan Sharma Consulting. “Agentic AI accelerates this by coordinating decisions across domains in real time.”

    A surge in edge computing investment is reshaping telecom network architectures, bringing AI inferencing closer to users through a distributed computing infrastructure. Telcos are stepping up investments in AI-native RAN and 6G — signaling a major industry intercept ahead of the traditional 6G deployment cycle, with 77% of respondents anticipating a much faster time to deployment of this new AI-native wireless network architecture.

    The top drivers of investment are using AI to enhance spectral efficiency, improving the performance of the radio access network supporting edge AI applications and accelerating the research and development of 6G.

    1. According to Nvidia’s latest “State of AI in Telecommunications” report which surveyed more than 1,000 respondents worldwide, 80% of telecom operators expect to see AI-native networks get the jump on 6G deployment, while around two-thirds said AI is driving autonomous network build out.

      Kanika Atri, senior director for telco marketing at Nvidia, noticed a stark increase in the rate of AI adoption compared to previous years.

      “It just blows my mind,” she told SDxCentral, explaining that in many countries, particularly those in Asia-Pacific, agentic AI had already moved from investment into adoption, with telcos now entering an adaptation phase where processes and architectures are redesigned around AI.

      “This time the numbers just blow off,” Atri added. “Like 90% people are already saying they saw impact to revenue, more than a third of them saying they saw more than 10% impact to revenue, 90% of them say they saw driving down of costs. So the question of quantifying ROI is a thing of the past. The telco industry is full steam ahead, investing, adopting, figuring out how to use it.”

      Atri framed AI adoption as a “no brainer” for telecom operators, arguing that every country and enterprise will build and use it, with telecom “already ahead of the curve.”

      Underpinning AI efforts from Nvidia’s perspective are generative models that sit at the bottom of the stack and “apply [themselves] to different categories of telcos’ operations,” with models initially used for operations support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS) purposes.

      “But networks is the biggest piece now,” Atri said. “Customer service and experience, which is very big … and things like their own operations: IT, HR, and so on. … So generative AI and generative models at the bottom is a core foundation for all the above.”

      Of these cohorts, the director said autonomous networks have become the standout AI use case for investment and impact, with agents being deployed on daily, repetitive tasks and complex activities that are highly error‑prone, such as preparing for traffic spikes during major events.

      Atri described this as “the most exciting pace of innovation we have seen,” adding that it is now “the No. 1 category when it comes to investments, to ROI, and future plans.”

      This is as AI and agents lend themselves “beautifully” to solve the scale and complexity of network data. But while they are looking ahead to fully autonomous networks, telecom operators are still being pragmatic, prioritizing the “80% of the burning problems” they see every day, according to Atri, over the other 20% of extremely complex edge cases.

      Atri also pointed to how quickly telecom operators expect to move to AI‑native network architectures such as AI radio access networks (RAN) and distributed environments.

      “What was surprising to me was how forward leaning the industry is on the move to the distributed edge, as well as anticipation of AI-RAN architectures ahead of the 6G cycle,” Atri said. “It speaks to the benefits of AI-RAN as an architecture where it’s included in radio signal processing, direct impact on spectral efficiency, energy efficiency. These are burning problems for telcos today. They just cannot have enough spectrum. They can just never have enough energy and AI, and the RAN network is contributing to the bulk of all of this consumption. And here AI is impacting. … This is about optimization and utilization and eventually opening new business opportunities.”

      Governance, sovereignty, and regulation are baked into that challenge. When asked whether operators need models and mechanisms to ensure compliance, Atri answered “100%,” stressing the importance of data sovereignty and privacy in the AI discussion.

      Nvidia’s report highlighted data-related issues were the biggest challenge for more than half (54%) of operators, up 34-percentage points from 2024. These challenges concern privacy and sovereignty, as well as data silos and data size and complexity.

      At an agentic AI panel discussion hosted by Ericsson last year, Girish Mahajan, senior leader for mobile AI data/automation at British operator BT, asked for much closer involvement from hyperscalers on telecom security regulation so that compliant architectures are baked into agents rather than left for each operator to figure out alone.

      “This is what telco expects. If you come up with that kind of architecture, then it will make our lives much easier,” Mahajan told an audience including SDxCentral.

      Atri concurred, stressing that data sovereignty and privacy were “extremely important” for operators and that guardrails, security, and governance must be included in agentic pipelines.

      “Those are not easy. Regulations vary from country to country, and this is where 90% of time is spent just fixing that data pipeline,” Atri said. “So yes, that is definitely something that every telco needs to work on.”

    “Nvidia once again exceeded expectations and with billions more in capex planned by the hyperscalers this year, demand for Nvidia’s chips remains robust. But the competitive picture is also shifting as companies like Meta diversify toward AMD and the big cloud players invest more in custom silicon. This puts a focus on Nvidia’s guidance for what the future holds in terms of maintaining its dominance as the AI buildout matures and questions around enterprise ROI intensify. A bright spot in Nvidia’s playbook is its continuous diversification strategy.
