Will “AI at the Edge” transform telecom or be yet another telco monetization failure?

New Telco Opportunity – AI at the Edge:

At MWC 2026 last week, there were a flurry of claims that “AI at the Edge” would transform the telecom industry.  One of many examples is an article titled, “The AI edge boom is giving telecom a new strategic role.”  In that piece, Jeff Aaron, vice president of product and solutions marketing at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) spoke with theCUBE’s John Furrier at MWC Barcelona, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed telecom edge AI and why networking is becoming a strategic foundation for data-centric services.  Aaron said:

“A big reason for [reignited interest in routing] is AI workloads. They’re moving everywhere now. They have to move to the edge.  For them to move to the edge, you’ve got to get them outside of the factory and to all the locations. We’re right in the core of that, and it’s super exciting.”

As AI expands to the edge, data will need to move not only to local compute, but also between many distributed edge sites, making routing paramount. There are four ways AI infrastructure is scaling — inside data centers and across distributed edge locations, according to Aaron.

“There’s scale-out, scale-across, scale-up, and on-ramp. Two are within the data center — scale-out and scale-up — but scale-across and edge on-ramp basically mean you got to figure out how to connect to those areas, and those are just networking,” he added.

Scale-across refers to connecting distributed data centers and edge locations, while edge on-ramp brings remote sites such as factories or branch locations into the network to access AI services. Supporting those distributed environments creates an opportunity for HPE to bring networking and compute together into a more integrated infrastructure stack. At MWC 2026 Barcelona, those trends are clearly coming into focus, according to Aaron.

“Data is moving everywhere right now, and the network is back. The network isn’t just plumbing. The network is how you build a value-added service using an AI workload as a telco infrastructure,” he added.

Telecom carriers are now urgently trying to move from being “dumb data pipes” to becoming “AI performance platforms” by leveraging their geographically distributed infrastructure to host AI closer to the end user.  They urgently want to pivot from selling just bandwidth and connectivity to selling outcomes and intelligence with a heavy focus on industrial and enterprise-specific edge deployments.  They are considering the following services and business models:

  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) & GPUaaS: Offering raw computing power, specifically GPUs, from edge data centers to enterprises that need low-latency processing without building their own facilities.
  • Sovereign AI Clouds: Providing AI services that guarantee data remains within national borders, appealing to government and highly regulated sectors like finance and healthcare.
  • API Monetization: Exposing real-time network data (e.g., location intelligence, predictive network quality, fraud risk scoring) via APIs that enterprises pay to integrate into their own applications.
  • Outcome-Based Pricing: Charging for specific business results, such as a “guaranteed video call quality” or “fraud loss reduction share,” rather than just data usage.
  • AI-as-a-Service (AIaaS): Bundling pre-trained models or specialized AI agents (e.g., for customer service or industrial monitoring) with connectivity

Major Carrier AI Edge Deployment Plans:

  • AT&T:
    • Launched Connected AI for Manufacturing in March 2026, which unifies 5G, IoT, and generative AI to provide real-time fault detection (claiming a 70% reduction in waste).
    • Deploying “Edge Zones” in major U.S. cities (Detroit, LA, Dallas) to allow developers to run low-latency, cloud-based software locally.
    • Partnering with AWS to link fiber and 5G directly into AWS environments for distributed AI workloads.
  • Verizon:
    • Unveiled Verizon AI Connect, a suite of products designed to manage resource-intensive AI workloads for hyperscalers like Google Cloud and Meta.
    • Trialing V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) platforms to provide carmakers with standardized APIs for low-latency edge processing in autonomous driving.
    • Collaborating with NVIDIA to integrate GPUs into private 5G networks for on-premise AI inferencing in robotics and AR.
  • SK Telecom (SKT):
    • Announced an “AI Native” strategy at MWC 2026, including a roadmap for AI-RAN (Radio Access Network) that uses GPUs to optimize network performance and host user AI apps simultaneously.
    • Building a Manufacturing AI Cloud powered by over 2,000 NVIDIA RTX GPUs to support digital twin simulations and robotics.
    • Expanding AI Data Centers (AIDC) across South Korea and Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Malaysia) using energy-optimized LNG-powered facilities.

A Dissenting View of “AI at the Edge”:

The global market for AI within the global telecommunications sector is valued at $6.69 billion in 2026, growing at a compound annual rate (CAGR) of 41.9% from 2025.   The broader edge AI market—including hardware, software, and services—is forecast to reach $29.98 billion in 2026, according to The Business Research Company We think those estimates are way too high.

Author’s Opinion:

Unless telcos change their corporate culture along with slowing the footprint growth of cloud service providers/hyperscalers, we think that AI at the Edge will be yet another telco monetization failure.  Just like their failure to monetize: 4G LTE apps, the telco cloud, 5G, multi-access edge computing (MEC), OpenRAN, LPWANs and other telecom technologies that never lived up to their promise and potential.

That’s largely because telcos are very weak: developing IT platforms, compute services, killer applications, and rapid execution of new services (e.g. 5G services require a 5G SA core network which telcos were very slow to deploy).  Telecom execs themselves cite cultural and speed‑of‑change issues: the industry is not organized like a software company, so it struggles to iterate products at AI/cloud pace. Also, telcos historically struggle with software. Managing distributed GPU clusters is vastly different from managing cell towers.

After spending billions on 5G with very  little or no ROI, investors are skeptical of the increased capex required for AI-grade edge servers which must be maintained by telcos.  Those servers will be expensive (especially if they contain clusters of Nvidia GPUs) and consume a lot of power, which is a critical issue at the edge of the carrier’s network.

Many network operators frame AI/edge as “network optimization” or “utilizing underused sites,” not as building monetizable AI platforms with APIs, SDKs, and ecosystems. This mirrors 5G, where huge RAN/core builds were not matched by a clear product and platform strategy, leaving value to OTTs and hyperscalers which are  extending their control planes and protocol stacks to the network edge (local zones, operator co‑lo, on‑premises stacks).

Telcos risk becoming “dumb pipes” for AI traffic if they can’t provide a superior developer ecosystem.  If they only sell space/power/connectivity, the cloud service providers will continue to own the developer and AI value chain.  Analysts warn that edge is a “right to participate, not a right to win.”  As such, value accrues to whoever owns the AI platform, tools, marketplace, and pricing power, not the entity that provides connectivity, PoP or cell towers.

Data fragmentation and weak “intelligence” layer:

  • AI monetization depends on high‑quality, cross‑domain data, but telco data is fragmented across OSS, BSS, probes, and partner systems; without unification, it is hard to expose compelling network/edge intelligence services.

  • Analysts emphasize that failure here reduces telcos to generic GPU landlords, while higher‑margin offers (real‑time quality, fraud, identity, mobility/context APIs) remain unrealized.

Narrow internal focus on cost savings:

  • Many operators’ early AI focus is inward (Opex reduction in assurance, planning, customer care) rather than building external, revenue‑generating products, echoing how early 5G was justified mainly on cost/efficiency.

  • Commentators warn that if AI/edge remains a “network efficiency” play, the commercial upside will go to cloud/AI natives that turn similar capabilities into products sold to enterprises.

What analysts say telcos must do differently:

  • Build “Sovereign AI factories” and edge AI clouds: GPU‑enabled sites with cloud‑like developer experience (APIs, self‑service portals, metering, SLAs) and clear sovereign/regional guarantees.

  • Combine differentiated connectivity with AI services (latency‑backed SLAs, AI‑on‑RAN, domain‑specific models for verticals) and use modern, flexible commercial models instead of just selling bandwidth or colocation.

Conclusions:

In summary, the main risk for telcos is to successfully transition from owning and maintaining network infrastructure to owning and operating AI platforms and products at software industry speed.  AI at the edge is less of a new service or product and more an architectural upgrade. The two ways telcos can benefit are from:

  1.  Internal cost reduction: If telcos use it to lower their own costs (fraud prevention, risk management, predictive maintenance, fault isolation, self-healing networks, etc.), it’s an automatic win but won’t increase the top line.
  2.  Revenue from new AI -Edge services, e.g. Verizon uses edge-based video analytics in warehouses to improve inventory turnover by up to 40%.   If they expect to charge a massive premium for “AI-enabled 5G,” they face the same monetization wall that has doomed them for the past 20 years!

Ethernet is now the leader in “scale-out” AI networking.  In 2023, InfiniBand held an ~80% share of the data center switch market. A little over two years later, Ethernet has overtaken it in data center switch and server port counts.  Indeed, the demand for Ethernet-based interconnect technologies continues to strengthen, reflecting the market’s broader shift toward scalable, open, and cost-efficient data center fabrics.  According to Dell’Oro Group research published in July 2025, Ethernet was on track to overtake InfiniBand and establish itself as the primary fabric technology for large-scale data centers. The report projects cumulative data center switch revenue approaching $80 billion over the next five years, driven largely by AI infrastructure investments.  Other analysts say  Ethernet now represents a majority of AI‑back‑end switch ports, likely well above 50% and trending toward 70–80% as Ultra Ethernet / RoCE‑based fabrics (Remote Direct Memory Access/RDMA over Converged Ethernet) scale.

Supercomputers and modern HPC clusters increasingly use high‑speed, low‑latency Ethernet as the primary interconnect, often replacing or coexisting with InfiniBand. The “type” of Ethernet used is defined by three layers: speed/lane ratePHY/PMD/optics, and protocol enhancements tuned for HPC and AI.   Slingshot, the proprietary Ethernet-based solution from HPE, commanded 48.1% of performance for the Top500 list in June 2025 and 46.3% in November 2025. On both of the lists, it provided interconnectivity for six of the top 10 – including the top three: El Capitan, Frontier, and Aurora.

HPC Speed and lane‑rate tiers:

  • Mid‑tier HPC / legacy supercomputers:

    • 100G Ethernet (e.g., 100GBASE‑CR4/FR4/LR4) remains common for mid‑tier clusters and some scientific workloads, especially where cost and power are constrained.

Hewlett Packward Enterprise (HPE) is going through yet another restructuring to reduce costs and to capitalize on the AI use cases it’s been developing.  HPE’s workforce reduction program announced in March 2025 was to reduce its headcount of around 61,000 by 2,500 and to have another reduction of 500 people by attrition, over a period of 12 to 18 months, eliminating about $350 million in annual costs when it is said and done. The plan is to have this restructuring done by the end of this fiscal year, which comes to a close at the end of October. The headcount at the end of Q2 Fiscal Year 2025 was 59,000, so the restructuring is proceeding apace and this is, by the way, the lowest employee count that HPE’s enterprise business has had since absorbing Compaq in the wake of the Dot Com Bust in 2001.

The company, which sells IT servers, network communications equipment and cloud services, employed about 66,000 people in 2017, not long after it was created by the bi-section of Hewlett-Packard (with the PC- and printer-making part now called HP Inc). By the end of April this year, the number of employees had dropped to 59,000 – “the lowest we have seen as an independent company,” said HPE chief financial officer of Marie Myers, on the company’s Wednesday earnings call (according to this Motley Fool transcript)– after 2,000 job cuts in the last six months. By the end of October, under the latest plans, HPE expects to have shed another 1,050 employees.

Weak profitability of its server and cloud units is why HPE now attaches such importance to intelligent edge. HPE’s networking division today encompasses the Aruba enterprise Wi-Fi business along with more recent acquisitions such as Athonet, an Italian developer of core network software for private 5G. It accounts for only 15% of sales but a huge 41% of earnings, which makes it HPE’s most profitable division by far, with a margin of 24%.

Customer growth is slowing at HPE’s GreenLake cloud services division. Only 1,000 customers added in the quarter, bringing to total to 42,000 worldwide. The annualized run rate for the GreenLake business inched up to $2.2 billion, compared to $2.1 billion in Q1 F2025 and from $1.5 billion a year ago.  It is in this area that HPE plans to accelerate it’s AI growth, via Nvidia’s AI/GPU chips.

With respect to the Juniper Networks acquisition, there is a possibility that the $14 billion deal may collapse. A legal battle in court is due to begin on July 9th, but Neri talked on the analyst call about exploring “a number of other options if the Juniper deal doesn’t happen.”

Apparently, artificial intelligence (AI) is allowing HPE to eject staff it once needed. It has apparently worked with Deloitte, a management consultancy, to create AI “agents” based on Nvidia’s technology and its own cloud. Let loose in finance, those agents already seem to be taking over some jobs. “This strategic move will transform our executive reporting,” said Myers. “We’re turning data into actionable intelligence, accelerating our reporting cycles by approximately 50% and reducing processing costs by an estimated 25%. Our ambition is clear: a leaner, faster and more competitive organization. Nothing is off limits.” 

HPE CEO Anthony Neris AI comments on yesterday’s earnings call:

Ultimately, it comes down to the mix of the business with AI. And that’s why we take a very disciplined approach across the AI ecosystem, if you will. And what I’m really pleased in AI is that this quarter, one-third of our orders came from enterprise, which tend to come with higher margin because there is more software and services attached to that enterprise market. Then you have to pay attention also to working capital. Working capital is very important because in some of these deals, you are deploying a significant amount of capital and there is a time between the capital deployment and the revenue profit recognition. So that’s why, it is a technology transition, there is a business transition, and then there’s a working capital transition. But I’m pleased with the progress we made in Q2.

The fact is that we have more than 250 use cases where we are doing PoCs (Proof of Concepts) or already deploying AI. In fact, more than 40 are already in production. And we see the benefits of that across finance, global operations, marketing, as well as services. HPE Uses AI To Drive The Business, Which Is Increasingly AI

HPE acquires private cellular network provider Athonet (Italy) to strengthen HPE Aruba’s networking portfolio

 Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) today announced the expansion of its connected edge-to-cloud offering with the acquisition of Athonet, a private cellular network technology provider that delivers mobile core networks to enterprises and communication service providers. Combined with the HPE telco and Aruba networking portfolios, Athonet will put HPE at the forefront of a growing market that is predicted by IDC to increase to more than $1.6 billion1 by 2026.

Based in Vicenza, Italy, Athonet has more than 15 years of experience delivering 4G and 5G mobile core solutions to customers and partners globally. HPE will integrate Athonet’s technology into its existing CSP and Aruba networking enterprise offerings to create a private networking portfolio that accelerates digital transformation from edge-to-cloud. The networking portfolio will provide the following benefits:

While HPE already offers a 5G cloud-native software core, Athonet gives deeper in-house capabilities to more quickly and directly deploy private 5G networks.

“Given HPE’s Wi-Fi and security assets – like Aruba – I’d say this makes a clear play to simplify management for key enterprise digital assets. And this is the kind of issue that enterprises are often bringing up to us,” Omdia chief analyst of enterprise services Camille Mendler told Channel Futures. Patrick Filkins, IDC‘s research manager for IoT and telecom network infrastructure, said Athonet can give HPE customers an improved option for deploying a private 5G network together with Wi-Fi. Filkins said that integrated portfolio could well serve an enterprise that has already done the heavy legwork of building a Wi-Fi network.

“This is a very complicated task, and one the enterprise itself controls. They don’t want to start from scratch or be forced to have someone else tinkering in their systems, so this acquisition will hopefully provide some assurance to enterprise customers that the vendors will help ensure their customers can repurpose work they’ve already done to integrate a new network technology, and hopefully new use cases,” Filkins said.

Filkins said the acquisition will immediately improve the HPE 5G core and gradually work its way into Aruba portfolio improvements. For example, HPE will integrate Athonet into the Aruba Central network management platform.

“Specifically, we expect HPE/Aruba to over time release follow-on solutions which help enterprises manage the two technologies seamlessly. Enterprises are not interested in deploying both 5G and Wi-Fi networks in a silo. They want a combined solution that can help tackle the integration and management issues from a single pane. This means you’ll see HPE’s telco and Aruba teams working together more closely over time,” Filkins said.

Mendler said one might see a U.S. equivalent in Celona, despite Athonet’s age (founded 2004) compared to that of Celona (founded in 2019). Filkins added that although many vendors provide private and public LTE/5G cores in the U.S., most run their headquarters abroad. He pointed to Cisco and Microsoft-acquired Mavenir, Affirmed Networks and MetaSwitch as 5G core providers in the U.S.

“However, from a competitive standpoint, Athonet competes globally against Nokia, Ericsson, Mavenir, Microsoft Azure, Cisco, etc., among others,” Filkins told Channel Futures.  He described Athonet as “no slouch” in the wireless market. He calls the company’s customer base deep, though consisting of smaller customers. HPE said in an announcement that Athonet has performed 450 customer deployments in various verticals. Athonet’s customers include SpaceX, which uses a private cellular network in Antarctica.

Filkins called the Athonet technology offerings “relatively advanced for 5G.” For example, the cloud-native 5G core meets almost all of 3GPP‘s listed functions. He also said Athonet’s core augments HPE’s 5G core offerings.

“The cloud-native part means it can be deployed fully on-site, fully in the cloud, or in a hybrid format. This should cover any scenario the customer wants. [Athonet] has specialized in selling mobile core software to enterprises, and smaller, regional operations for years. It knows the needs of the enterprise well,” Filkins said.

Athonet CEO and co-founder Gianluca Verin said his team looks forward to joining HPE. Moreover, he said he wants to enhance HPE’s goal of being “the leading edge-to-cloud solutions provider.”  Verin worked in support and solution engineer positions at Ericsson for eight years before starting Athonet.

HPE’s GreenLake edge-to-cloud services platform will host the private 5G service. HPE executives have said GreenLake as-a-service consumption model will “simplify” enterprises’ entrance into 5G and lower risk.

“I think this is an important step HPE is taking. For the most part, private 5G and Wi-Fi networks have been offered as point solutions, but HPE/Aruba intend to do the ‘under-the-hood’ work to make them as integrated as possible, which is what enterprise customers want,” Filkins said.

In December, HPE said 80% of its top 100 customers have adopted the GreenLake platform. The vendor is also equipping Aruba partners to deliver its network-as-a-service offering.

When HPE unveiled a private 5G offering one year ago, an executive said HPE preferred to go to market though system integrators, telcos and service providers rather than straight to the enterprise.  HPE’s telco business serves 300 customers across the world, the company said.

Aruba Introduces Industry’s 1st Enterprise-Grade Wi-Fi 6E Access Point

HPE subsidiary Aruba today announced the first commercially available, enterprise-grade Wi-Fi 6E [1.] solution set – the 630 Series of campus access points (APs), starting with the AP-635.

Note 1.  Wi-Fi 6E refers to IEEE 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) products that support 6GHz wireless spectrum. Wi-Fi 6E enables faster speeds and lower latencies than Wi-Fi 6 and earlier iterations of WiFi (IEEE 802.11).  WiFi 6 products are starting to appear in routers [2.] and siliconCisco has been selling a WiFi AP for enterprises since 2019.

In April 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated 1,200 megahertz of spectrum in the 6 GHz band for unlicensed WiFi use.  That was the largest swath of spectrum approved for WiFi since 1989.   Opening the 6 GHz band more than doubles the amount of RF spectrum available for Wi-Fi use, allowing for less congested airwaves, broader channels, and higher-speed connections and enabling a range of innovations across industries. The industry’s first enterprise-grade Wi-Fi 6E solution, the new Aruba 630 Series delivers greater performance, lower latency, and faster data rates to support high-bandwidth applications and use cases.  The new Aruba 630 Series APs will be available in calendar third quarter 2021.

The vendor entered the edge services market with the cloud-native platform last year to target campuses, data centers, branches, and remote workers, but it only works with Aruba’s access points, switches, and SD-WAN gateways.
